May 2009 We've started the year as we mean to go on! In March
the band took part in the Welsh Regional Championships in the Brangwyn
Hall, Swansea. After a very good performance of "Once and Future King"
by Andrew Baker, we achieved a very credible 4th place. This result,
along with our 4th place from last year, means that the band has been
promoted to the 2nd Section in the National Grading. That means the band
has achieved 2 promotions in the last 4 years. Well done GCG!!
Back to the Welsh League contests, and May 16th saw the annual trip to
Ebbw Vale. As GCG are in the 2nd Section in the league, we were up
against some really tough opposition. Playing off the number 5 draw,
adjudicator Mr Malcolm Brownbill was very impressed with our performance
of "Aeronauts" by Goff Richards, and we were awarded 3rd Prize, with
Lewis Merthyr Band coming 1st and City of Cardiff 2nd. A fabulous result
for the band, and possibly the best performance by the band for a few
years. Well done to all.
November 2008
After a difficult year on the contest stage, the
band travelled to Treorchy on November 15th for the final contest of the
year. After an excellent performance of "Symphonic Suite for Brass Band"
by Leighton Lucas, the band were awarded 4th place, with Blaenavon Town
band taking 1st Place. Congratulations to Blaenavon Town, and lets hope
GCG Band returns to winning ways in 2009, where we aim to improve on our
4th place at the Welsh Regional Championships at the Brangwyn Hall,
Swansea.
September 2008
GCG Band would like to wish Nils Richards, Rhian Thomas and Ffion
Halfpenny the best of luck as they begin their studies in University.
Nils, our departing 2nd Trombone, is going to study Music at Cardiff
University and has signed for championship section band Tongwynlais.
Rhian (Tutti Solo Cornet) and Ffion (1st Horn) are going to North Wales
to study Music at Bangor University. Good luck, and we look forward to
seeing you when you're back in the area. |
